As we age our skin collagen begins to break down, skin begins to loose elasticity and fat starts to deposit in certain areas. This combination of aging and weight gain can sometimes cause the skin on the upper arms to sag or “hang”. This is considered unattractive by many women who complain that the loose skin flaps about when they wave their arms, run, dance, etc.
An arm lift surgery is a procedure designed to correct this problem by surgically removing the portion of the skin that is loose or “hanging”. In certain cases where skin elasticity is still strong liposuction alone may be enough to produce a lift. Otherwise, during the arm lift surgery Dr Sproule will mark the incisions and trim the skin. It should be noted that arm lift surgery results in a scar running underneath the arm, from elbow to armpit. Scar revision and laser treatments can however soften these scars.
Following arm lift surgery a compression garment will be worn to apply pressure and help reduce swelling and shape the new contour of the arm. The result is firm and shapely upper arms!
